The 2nd Great Devilbiss Gathering Announced

The heirs of Rev. John Wesley DeVilbiss, circuit rider extra-ordinary, invite the entire family to gather in San Antonio, TX Nov 26 and 27th (Thanksgiving weekend) 2009. Anyone whose ancestry dates back to the brothers who arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, September 11, 1731, on the good Ship Britannia and adopted the surname Devilbiss will have an exceptional opportunity to gather for a Texas style "Welcome" and Bar-B-Que.

As we discovered at the First Great Devilbiss Gathering (2006 in Maryland), this event offers family an opportunity to meet extended “kin”, develop new friendships and gain a new respect for America. This Gathering's program will discuss the development into the Expansionist and G.I. Generations (cir ti. 1865 through 1924). There will be ample opportunity to share family research, stories, and view artifacts from generations past. Novice genealogists will have an unprecedented opportunity to meet with and discuss generational data with the “keepers of the family tree”. Others will want to arrange for “heritage photos” on the beautiful grounds.

The Comfort Inn & Suites at Braunig Lake has been chosen to host visitors from out of town. Reservations should be made directly with the hotel (210.633.1833) and specify the Devilbiss gathering in order to gain the quoted rates (singles $55.99 doubles $63.99). Most of the program including presentations and festivities will be conducted at the Oak Island United Methodist Church during the day on Saturday, Nov 27. Plan now not to miss the event!

Auction Proceeds Report

The Devilbiss Family Cemetery is located slightly west and about half way between Canton and LaGrange in Lewis County, Missouri. The first time I saw this cemetery was in about 1998 or 1999. It was on the old family farm of Casper (the first's) grandson - John Devilbiss. (Lineage would be Casper I, George, John or #408 )

Geneology Data

Not all the great work done about our family has been made public but a great deal has. Dr. Wilbur DEVILBISS (dates and location) spent many hours and many days researching our roots in the area the brothers were known to have moved to. This data was left to the public domain in the custody of Jere DEVILBISS (Columbus, MO) who has continued updating it and has converted into a database format which is more compatible with today's technology. With some advanced warning, Jere has offered to have CD's of that data available at the Great Gathering!

Members of the extended DEVILBISS Family conducted a Great Gathering at the New Windsor, MD Conference Center from Oct 3 thru Oct 6, 2006 in celebration of 275 years of family heritage in the Americas. It was a great opportunity for us to step back into American History and/or Genealogy in a very personal way as we meet new "kin" and experienced the country over which our ancestors traveled

The highlights included a welcoming banquet, a picnic lunch at Bethel Methodist Church on Sam's Creek Road, and a farewell luncheon. Over 150 visitors were attracted from as far away as California ranging from a toddler to 91 years old! An impromptu auction of family reference materials and an artifact raised over $500.00 for desperately needed repairs for a family grave site in MO.

Stories and pictures will added as they become avialable.

And a Good Time was had by all!
